A Case for Project Revenue Management

Presented by Peter Varani, PMP

Lunch Meeting (Columbia, MD)
The complex nature of today’s business environment requires many businesses to use project management processes to deliver products and services to their client (Service Delivery Projects). Such service delivery projects are quite common in the telecommunications and information technology business sectors. But these are not the only business sectors employing such projects today. Since these projects involve delivering a product or service to a client, the projects contain a revenue component. Simply put, the client or receiver of the product or service is paying for these services. In some cases, full payment is due upon project completion when the full product or service has been provided. But in many cases, client payment is provided at multiple points throughout the project typically as key milestones are achieved. Today’s project managers find themselves working more and more with finance and accounting to grasp the intricacies of revenue management. This presentation introduces this project management area of expertise by describing the need for a Project Revenue Management (PRM) knowledge area within the PMBOK. In addition, it explores and breaks down the PRM processes consistent with other knowledge areas described in the PMBOK. Mr. Varani has 15 years of project management experience in the telecommunications and IT industries. He has managed full scale network deployments, launched new products, and implemented global private networks for Fortune 500 accounts. As a Program Manager for Unisys, he manages a team of project managers supporting various design and deployment projects for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Federal Protective Service (FPS). Prior to Unisys, he was General Manager for a wireless communications company in the U.S. Virgin Islands. A PMP since 2003, Peter has a B.E. in Electrical Engineering from the State University of New York Maritime College and an MBA Finance from Loyola University.
